Four people have been taken into custody after a man with "multiple gunshot wounds" arrived at Waitākere Hospital in the early hours of this morning, police say.

Police were called to the West Auckland hospital at about 3.30am, with reports that a man had presented to staff with "serious injuries to his thigh and back".

Senior Sergeant Matthew Child told 1News that these injuries were gunshot wounds.

"That man has been transported to Auckland Hospital in a serious but stable condition."

Following this, police made several inquiries throughout the night.

At about 5am, armed police could be seen surrounding a small truck on Waimumu Rd in Massey - around 4km from the hospital. Footage taken by 1News showed an occupant being handcuffed while officers searched the vehicle.

Child said the truck would form a key part of an investigation.

"The truck was [allegedly] seen leaving shortly after the victim arrived at Waitākere."

In a later statement, a police spokesperson said information from the injured man had led officers to a Massey address where he had "reportedly been injured hours earlier".

"Officers have visited the address this morning and taken four people into custody, who are assisting police with inquiries," a police spokesperson said in a statement.

The investigation remains ongoing.
